After Berlin

After leaving Berlin and having been home for a couple days I can say that I am so happy I got to be a part of the FGX experience. I am positive my time in Berlin and Germany is not over, I will be back someday!

I have noticed some major differences between Austin and Berlin. For example, in Berlin, it is not uncommon for people to not have a car or even a drivers license whereas in Austin, it is uncommon if you DON’T have some form of your own transportation. It is interesting to compare the differences in the culture as well, especially in regards to the drinking age and the culture around drinking.

I absolutely loved every moment of this trip and would recommend it for anyone in the future years. I learned not only a lot about Berlin and Germany, I also learned about myself and who I am. Thank you to everyone who made this experience so great and I cannot wait to return to Germany!

From Berlin to Dresden!

Yesterday we started off the day in a somber sort of mood by visiting Sachsenhausen, a concentration camp. It was really upsetting to see how things were and learn about the history of the different concentration camps. It was very sad to see and while I’m glad I went, I’m happy it’s over.

Luckily we shared a group meal afterwards to lighten the mood. We got to eat at Berlin’s oldest restaurant, Zur letzten Instanz, opened in 1621. Everything on the menu was accompanied by white asparagus which was pretty tasty!

Today I left Berlin……to travel to Dresden!!

After getting to Dresden by train, we toured the Radeberger Brewery! It might have been a little early for a brewski, but since we had to get up pretty early and catch the train it didn’t seem too bad. We learned all about how the beer was made, filled, packaged and then sent out.

In the afternoon, we went toured Volkswagen production plant! It was so amazing. It was so clean and organized. I really enjoyed this part! (And I totally want to own a Volkswagen now)!

After that, we did a short city tour of Dresden. It was very quick but nothing short of amazing. The weather we beautiful and the architecture was completely incredible! I will definitely be visiting Dresden again someday.

My time in Dresden was short lived, but amazing, as expected! I’m loving every moment of this trip and cannot wait to experience the rest of Berlin!

BMW in Berlin!

Today we got to go to the BMW plant! We toured the motorcycle production plan. It was amazing to see the process of how the motorcycles were put together.  (http://www.bmw-werk-berlin.de/en/)    Before getting to go to the BMW plant, we got to tour the Spreefeld Architecture and Design Studio! This was probably my favorite thing that we have been able to do so far. We got to see the different buildings around the city and we also got to hear about the inspiration for the different projects. One thing we got to see was called Tee-pee land. It was basically a little park with people living in tee-pees and completely supporting themselves by growing food and creating their own energy.       Things I love about Berlin:

  • The culture
  • The history
  • The food
  • The city

Things I don’t love about Berlin:

  • Water is not free and 9 out of 10 times it is sparkling
  • There is cigarette smoke everywhere

I just want to say thank you to this amazing city. I have learned so much about myself as well as the differences between European and American cultures. I can’t wait to see what else I have to learn!!

Beautiful Berlin: Mallory travels the city!

Berlin is everything I could have ever imagined and so much more! I am still in shock that I am actually here after an entire semester of anticipation!

Yesterday, I got to go on a city tour. I got to see a large majority of the city including the United States Embassy as well as many historic landmarks such as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of England (pictured). The memorial was over 1,800 blocks of concrete of all different sizes and weights. The designer didn’t say much about the exhibit because he wanted to leave the interpretation up to the citizens. While it was sad to be there because it brought up these memories, it was also really cool how the government wanted the memorial in the middle of the city for people to pass by daily. It was a sign that Germans should remember their past and but also to not make the same mistake again.

On my free time, I went to the largest mall in Europe and ate the best food of my life. I went to a little restaurant in the food court and got curry wurst and potatoes for 5€ which is pretty good!

Today I got to go to several different business sites and learn about the different companies and the roles they play in the city.

I started out the day at the German Ministry of Education. The Ministry of Education is where funding for research projects and institutions, general education policies, and regulation of nuclear energy come from! I got to learn about the different programs students can choose after high school graduation as well as different sectors of the German government.

After picking up a quick lunch at Die Eins, a small restaurant overlooking a river, we made our way to Topography of Terror. The lunch was absolutely amazing and it was such a pretty environment. (Yes mom, that’s only a coke)

The Topography of Terror is now a history museum where the Nazi headquarters once were. It was right behind what is left of the Berlin Wall. And across the street from what was originally the Nazi Air-Control Center. This was a free mesuem open to the public which I thought was interesting. But again, the government wants the citizens to know about the history of Germany. While we were there we saw many school groups learning about the different things the Nazi Party did. While it was sad, I really enjoyed it and thought it was very interesting.

The next stop was Transparency International, a global civil society organization leading the fight against corruption. This company is focused on creating a more “transparent” work environment for many companies through anti-corruption strategies. We got to see the different types of countries that were corrupt as well as the different ways to measure the amount of corruption in a company. We also saw a table of the amount of transparency within a company and unfortunately some of the American companies such as Apple, Google, and Amazon were towards the bottom of the list.

During our free time, the group decided that we would go to a beer garden to watch the soccer game. As one would imagine, this idea completely turned on us for many different reasons. First, we accidentally got on the wrong bus from where we were. Then after realizing it, we got off and found a map to try and make our way to where we were going. We ended up walking through a pretty nice neighborhood but eventually landing on the street we wanted to be one. All while it’s pouring rain. After wee got to the street, we started walking towards what we thought was the beer garden only to find out 2 miles later that the beer garden was closed because the street was blocked off due to the President of Israel visiting. We apparently were also walking in a restricted area and even though we passed several cops, it wasn’t until the end that someone stopped us and told us to leave immediately because we were trespassing. However, after about an hour of walking in a giant circle, we finally found a sports bar and got to watch the game!

While the past few days have been long, they have been nothing short of magical. I am more than excited to continue my journey tomorrow and the rest of the week! Auf Wiedersehen!!!

Watch out Berlin, I Have Arrived!!

7 hours in the Atlanta airport, 2 trips to Chick-fil-a, a 9 hour plane ride to Amsterdam in the middle seat, and an hour plane ride to Berlin and I have finally arrived! I am completely overwhelmed with everything going on!

I have had a very difficult time sleeping for two reasons, one- my body is on a completely different time zone, and two- how am I supposed to sleep when there is a brand new city and culture to explore right outside my door?!

I cannot wait to tour the city in the morning and scope out where all I want to visit on my free time! I will be staying in a hostel while I am here, which is comparable to a dorm. (looks like I haven’t completely rid myself of shower shoes quite yet…) The hostel is located in the center of Berlin, perfect for exploring the city!

Be on the lookout for more posts coming soon!!

My Final Day :(

My final day in Berlin was sad and so much fun all at the same time. Sad because I cannot believe my time in this amazing city is coming to a close, but also so much fun because I got to experience something very near and dear to German’s hearts… A futbol (soccer) game!!!

Hertha Berlin played Eintracht Frankfurt in their last home game of the season. It was very exciting because the stands were packed with people singing and drinking lots of beer. After halftime, right before the game was supposed to start up again, the other team’s fans started throwing things and even set off a few fireworks. It was super weird and a little scary because that can be pretty dangerous but they did get in trouble so that’s okay. And while we didn’t win, we didn’t lose either! The score was 0-0.

And so with that Berlin, I must leave you. Thank you for showing me one of the most amazing experiences of my life. While my time might have been short, I know this isn’t the last time I will be here! I have loved every moment and would highly encourage any type of study abroad program available to anyone!

Biers, Bratwurst, and Birkenstocks: Mallory’s going to Berlin!

And so the countdown begins…!!! A little less than 24 until I will be traveling with twenty other students to the beautiful city of Berlin!!

This past semester, I got the opportunity to take a class called “First-Year Global Experience”. The class is for first-year students in the Leeds School of Business. Over the course of the semester, the class focused on Ethics, Expansion, and Efficiency in global economies. What better way to learn about an economy than going and visiting that place?! As a part of this class, I will be getting to go to several different business headquarters in Berlin, such as the Ministry of Education, Transparency International, the BMW Plant, Volkswagen, and more, to see first hand how they do things, Germany style!

I will be getting to spend a little over a week traveling around Berlin and I could not be more excited! The only time I have ever left the United States has been on a cruise ship going to a tropical island. I am excited to venture over to Europe and catch a glimpse of what the other side of the world is like. I will even get the chance to go to Dresden one of the days!

On my way to Berlin, I have about a 7 hour layover in Atlanta so I am hoping to get some reading done that I didn’t get a chance to do during school!

I cannot wait to see what Berlin and the rest of Germany has in store for me. Though my time in Berlin is short, I will do my best to update this blog while trying to make the most out of my experience. Follow me and my journey to the land of biers, brats, and Birkenstocks as I spend the next 10 days in Berlin!

Guten Tag!
